Stone Talk: Onyx

Onyx is a traditional birthstone for J
uly, and is the ancient July birthstone dating back to the old Roman, Italian and Hebrew calendar. Before the gemstone materialized in these ancient calendars as the birthstone of July, Onyx was the main zodiac stone for Leo, which falls partly on the month of July.

Primarily associated with the Root Chakra, Onyx assists with challenges in life by absorbing and transforming negative energy, thus prevents the draining away of personal energy. It is believed to help with grounding and controlling, thus eliminating excess or unwanted energies. Onyx jewellery is worn to defend against negativity that is directed at you. This is a useful stone especially when support is needed during times of stress, confusion or grief.

Onyx has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs' scale of mineral hardness, about the same as the more commonly seen crystal, Quartz.
The best way to care for your Onyx stone is to wipe it clean with a moist cloth. It is not recommended to use any sort of ultrasonic cleaners or ammonia, as the stones may be porous and therefore might absorb chemicals and the build-up inside the stone may lead to discolouration. Black Onyx is often dyed. The banded white and black form is usually natural and not dyed.
